    TRIUMPH IGNITION COILS
    The GT40 requires 12 volts on the positive side, whereas the GT40R requires 9 volts which is accomplished by using an inline resistor in the power supply wire to the coil. In some cases the resistance is built into the power supply wire to the coil.

    Check the voltage being supplied to your coil.

    If it's 9 volts, use the GT40R. $39.95

     

    If it's 12 volts, use the GT40. $39.95

    From the factory, they use 9 volts to run the coil, and in order to help start the car, there is a wire from the starter motor which supplies 12 volts when you crank the engine over so the coil gives a much bigger spark. To test this, measure the voltage at the coil during engine cranking. If all is standard, you should have 9 volts when the ignition is turned on, and 12 during cranking.

    If you supply 12 volts to a GT40R, the coil won't last too long. If you supply 9 volts to a GT40, then you are going to get a very poor spark.

    Wiring Colour Code Table
    Many British designed vehicles use colour coded cables to assist in identifying the various circuits in use. This is an extract from BS-AU7a 1983 Colour Code for Vehicle Wiring, from the British Standards Institution, 2 Park St., London W1A 2BS.

    (Note that these colour codes may not apply directly to older cars. For example, the wipers on cars up to 1980 (at least) are not on a separate fuse circuit, so they are not orange, but green. Check the schematic for your car to be certain. - cak)

    Depress the brake pedal hard a few times this will hopefully bring up the shoes closer to the drum

    NOTE

    Now to reset the brakes. Slacken the adjuster so that the brake shoes and fully "in" and refit the drum. Either get an assistant to pull the handbrake lever fully off, i.e. backwards into the back plate. Then go and stand on the brake pedal and you will hear the adjuster click up. Release the handbrake pin and rotate the hub to make sure the shoes are central and then do it again. You may get one or two more clicks out of it. Once this is done, re-attach the handbrake cable. You will need to lengthen it, and adjust later. There are two points of adjustment. One under the car by the compensator and one under the off-side trailing arm.
