KEEPING DOWN THE COSTS

Last month I sold my old Austin and Invested in a Minor 1000 Traveller of
59
vintage. I was lucky with the car - one owner, very clean, and below the
usual
market price. As always with a different car, I had decided to drain and
replace the
engine, gearbox and rear axle oils. Equally, as usual, the job needed doing
(although record sheets in the car showed a garage had kept the car up to
the
mark regularly) and in view of a slight fluffiness in the newish engine,
I decided to
go one stage further.
I put a compression gauge on the engine and recorded figures of 174,170,165
and 155 pounds on the cylinders. The next step was to buy a gallon tin of
Redex
for $3.75 and put three ounces into each plug hole. Then the sump was filled
with
Redex and the whole lot was let to stand for half an hour. This is to give
the
lubricant a chance to work around the piston rings and at the end of the
half hour
the excess Redex is removed by pressing the starter button until the lubricant
has
been all pumped out. Half a dozen prods will probably be needed.
It is essential to lay a rug over the plug holes when this is done. I forgot
this detail
was swamped with Redex as a result. It is possibly very good for the complexion
but it tastes horrible - and it turns a white shirt an interesting shade
of pink. So
remember the rag.
Then back went the plugs and the engine was set to run, at a fast idle speed
for an
hour. At the end of that time, the sump was drained, the filter changed,
and the
engine refilled with Castrol lite and a proportion of Redex. The final part
of the
business was to go to a quiet spot, drape a damp sack over the exhaust pipe
and,
with the engine running over at about 1000 r.p.m., trickle Redex into the
air intake.
"remember this was from the sixties so prices are wrong!! "

REDEX provides the oilier oil needed by the modem internal com-bustion engine.
A chemical compound with an oil base, it is an extremepressure oil and
fuel additive containing carbon softeners, a milddetergent, an anti-oxidant
and liquid wax.
REDEX blends with all usual lubricants, including multigrade, andall grades
of fuel. It strengthens the oil film and inhibits sludge andgumming.
In addition, REDEX provides high temperature lubricationand ensures fast
oil circulation when starting from cold.
FOR ALL ENGINES
Suitable for two and four-stroke engines, motor-cycles, three-wheelers and
cars, REDEX improves performance by reducing carbondeposits on cylinder
heads, valves, and pistons.
Carbon deposits meanloss of power. With less carbon, the periods between
decokes aregreatly extended, with consequent savings.
REDEX does a great job, giving your engine a protective film of highresistant
oil that beats friction and mechanically generated heat.
Theaverage dose, costing only a penny, is one shot of REDEX (approx.
1 oz.)to a gallon of petrol. For town runs a double shot is recommended.
The enemy of the efficient engine is oil starvation. As an uppercylinder
lubricant, REDEX enables your engine to reach correctworking temperatures
without being starved of oil.
REDEX QUICK SERVICE
The REDEX Quick Service is a compact version of the full REDEXtreatment
to boost performance and give startling economy.
Thisoperation can be carried out by any REDEX agent, while you wait.
The recommended charge is only 18s. 6d. for an engine with a fourpint sump,
including new oil and all REDEX. For larger sumps theincreased cost is 2s,
6d. for each extra pint of REDEX/oil mixture.
WHAT DOES IT DO ?
The purpose of the REDEX Quick Service is to achieve a substantiallessening
of friction, although of course,
REDEX cannot make up forthe wear that has already taken place in your engine.
This rapidREDEXing acts as a ' shot in the arm' for tired engines so
that greaterefficiency results.
AT THE GARAGE
First step in the Quick Service is to drain the old oil from
the sumpand to replace it with a fresh supply of your usual oil and REDEX.
REDEX is added in the proportion of one part to three parts of oil.
Next, with the engine running at a fast tickover, 5 oz. of REDEX aregradually
injected through each carburettor and a REDEX Refresher ofapprox. 5 oz.
is added to the fuel in the tank.
For maximum economy and high-level performance the only answer ofcourse,
is the full REDEX treatment which includes an engine tune-up.

THE LUBROCHARGER
The REDEX. Lubrocharger fulfilsa much needed function, enabling
acontinuous bleed of REDEX to befed into your engine at a predeter-mined
rate.
It is easily adjusted bymeans of a simple set screw.
A finger-touch control allows thedriver to inject an extra 5 cc of REDEX
into the manifold
whenever the need arises and the engine isunder particular stress, i.e.,
coldstarting, long distance high-speedcruising, etc.
FITTING THE INSTRUMENT
Attached to the dashboard with a clip, the Lubrocharger draws
itssupply of REDEX from a quart can mounted under the bonnet.REDEX is delivered
to the engine by means of a permanent adaptor.This is fitted into the inlet
manifold between the engine and thecarburettor butterfly and as near to
the carburettor as possible.

Getting the most out of our available horsepower without extensivemechanical
modifications, is an ambition that can now be realised.
Engine efficiency is reflected either in more miles per gallon, or inimproved accelerationone cannot normally have it both ways atonce!
Willing horsepower is usually the hardest worked and REDEXengineers are concerned to ease the burden on over-strained 'horses'.REDEX is an Oil and Fuel Additive which performs a number of vitalfunctions in a highly stressed engine.
In petrol, REDEX is an uppercylinder lubricant providing lubrication to dry cylinder walls on everycold start.
It will prevent hard carbon deposits forming on valves andpiston ringsa
major cause of poor compressionand give muchlonger periods between
de-cokes.
A s an extreme pressure lubricant in engine and gearbox REDEXincreases oil
film strength, cuts down frictional heat.
As a syntheticliquid wax, it ensures lubrication at high temperatures, preventingpossible seizure during periods of high stress and tight bearing con-ditions. REDEX blends completely with all fuels and all grades oflubricating oil. REDEX is added to petrol, one penny shot (approx.1/2oz.) to each gallon of fuel, and engine oil in the proportion of onepart REDEX to three parts oil.

Before REDEX treatment the engine is checked. After taking per-formance
times and making an accurate petrol consumption test thesump is drained
and filled with REDEX. Plugs are removed and2 or 3 ozs. of REDEX poured
through each plug hole and left to soakfor 20 minutes. Plug holes are covered
with rag and the starter motoris operated to eject surplus REDEX and plugs
replaced. The engine isstarted and set to run at a fast tickover for 15
minutes, during whichtime i pint of REDEX is bled into the inlet manifold.
The sump isthen drained and refilled with one part REDEX to three parts
oil.Sparking plugs and contact breaker points are then cleaned and ad-justed,
and the timing accurately reset. It is possible to obtain a quickand more
accurate ignition setting by using a REDEX tuning gaugethan by reference
to flywheel markings. Carburettor adjustmentsshould be made and the car
can be rechecked for performance andconsumption.
