HYLOMAR SPRAY AND PASTE

 

Hylomar Universal Blue

is the world standard for a non-setting sealant. It is used by many of the world’s automotive manufacturers, major airlines, compressor manufacturers, heavy equipment manufacturers, various OEMs and racing teams. It is a polyester urethane based viscous putty blended with a solvent to make it easy to apply, whether pumped, applied in a tube, or sprayed in an aerosol. It was a revolutionary sealant when it was introduced over 40 years ago, a development product out of Rolls Royce that was used to seal the flanges in gas turbine engines and withstand the high temperatures and intense vibration of a jet engine. A non-setting sealant, it doesn’t harden, even at 250oC. It has a unique curtaining action. As flanges sealed with Hylomar Universal Blue are pulled apart, the material stretches, and then breaks cohesively, leaving sealant on both sides. When the flanges return together, the putty reseals, a self-healing mechanism. This makes Universal Blue a particularly effective sealant on close fitting large flanges which are subject to extreme vibration, distorition, or joint movement, because while the seal may break for a microsecond, it reseals and the fluids remain contained

Universal Blue is resistant to a wide range of fluids, including all industrial fuels, oils, water and brine, air, turbine and piston engine combustion products, water, water/glycol and methanol mixtures, petroleum and synthetic diester lubricating oils, gasoline, lubricating oils, gasoline, kerosene fluids, and most fluorocarbon refrigerants. Hylomar Universal Blue can be used to seal joint faces or threaded parts. It is effective for sealing metal to metal and plastic to plastic. Typical applications include water pumps, oil pumps, instrument inspection covers, cylinder heads, oil sumps, intake manifolds, timing case covers, gear box and transmission housings, and as a coating for pre-formed gaskets.

Hylomar Universal Blue can be used to seal joint faces or threaded parts. It is effective for sealing metal to metal and plastic to plastic. Typical applications include water pumps, oil pumps, instrument inspection covers, cylinder heads, oil sumps, intake manifolds, timing case covers, gear box and transmission housings, and as a coating for pre-formed gaskets, it also has tremendous vibration and noise damping properties.

Hylomar Advanced Formulation is a solvent free version ofHylomar Universal Blue. Advanced Formulation was developed twenty years ago as a response to pressures to eliminate solvents from manufacturing processes. Instead of using a solvent such as methylene chloride or acetone as a carrier for the Universal Blue polymer, Hylomar chemists found a silica-type mixture that was solvent free and yet still was easily applicable and retained the benefits of Universal Blue. Advanced Formulation (AF) does have some differences to Universal Blue. The curtaining effect (elongation) is not quite as large, so the gap fill is slightly reduced. On the other hand, the silica content raises the temperature resistance of the compound, and also provides a mechanism to continue sealing the joint at high temperatures even after the Hylomar polymer has burned off.

Advanced Formulation is now widely used in the automotive industry, particularly on gear box and transmission housings and flanges, where it is resistant to gear oils that attack silicones. AF is known to apply smoothly and easily without the maintenance issues and curing problems associated with silicones and anaerobics. See our Automotive OEM pages for more details.

You could say Universal Blue was an industrial precursor of the 3M Post-It Note™. Non- setting sealants work by filling the imperfections between the joint surfaces. This stops any fluids leaking through the joint. The product has a low cohesive strength so that the joint can be opened easily. Much like a Post-It Note ™ Hylomar non-setting sealants permit joint movement, and even flange separation, but reseal the moment the joint returns to its normal position. This self-healing mechanism is at the core of how non-setting sealants work.

If you would like to experiment, try spraying the back of a poster with Hylomar XP Aerosol. It will then adhere to a wall or another surface, yet can be pulled apart like a Post-It Note.

Hylomar Universal Blue has higher adhesion, and will support more weight than a Post-It Note, but it works on a similar principle. Some customers have used AF to position metal pieces in place during assembly when they need to be re-positioned or adjusted later in the process. The temporary bond would hold the piece in place temporarily.

As Universal Blue is non-curing, it allows for easy disassembly and repair. Old Universal Blue can be just wiped off with a rag, paper towel (it works better with a solvent such as our Hylomar Gasket Remover) or Hylomar Grand Prix Wipes.

The application of Universal Blue is straightforward, which makes for simple manufacturing processes. There are no set times to observe, nor cure times to slow up testing or assembly. AF will not clog up nozzles or cure over a shut-down period. In fact, the shelf life of Universal Blue is extremely long. While Hylomar only warrants its product for two years, under proper storage conditions Universal Blue is known to last for very long times and remain effective.We have seen tubes from the 1960’s that are still ok (although we do not recommend using or guarantee product this old).

AF has been noted to work at temperatures up to 350°C on certain applications. We hypothesize that the silica/Hylomar polymer mixture fills the tiny surface imperfections of these joints, and at high temperatures even after the polymer degrades (which starts to occur at temperatures above 250C) the silica and residue remain as a film on the surface, which for close fitting flanges closes off the leak paths.

Universal Blue was used widely in the 1960’s and 1970’s in automotive and engineering applications as a gasket dressing and as a liquid gasket in its own right. This was the era of big cast iron engines, heavy flanges, and solid gaskets. The development of liquid sealant technology, including silicone RTVs and anaerobic gasketing materials, meant that solid gaskets could be eliminated and smaller, lighter flanges could be used. In many companies Hylomar was the forgotten alternative.

But today there is a resurgence of interest in Hylomar, and in particular Hylomar AF. There has been a realization that there are certain joints and applications where Hylomar AF is vastly superior to the alternatives. We characterise these joints by their gaps.

For close fitting machined surfaces, in static environments, a proper fitting flange may not need a sealant at all. There is no gap to fill, no leak path available to the fluid or gas, and the joint is tight.

However, engineers are cautious and prudent folk, and provide for imperfections and tolerances, and for non-static environments, such as vibrations, torque, shock, and twisting, all of which can create gaps in flanges. Pressed metal flanges (such as oil pans) are too irregular to create a tight fit. Bolt patterns may not be regular, and clamp loads can vary. For all these reasons, and more (see our more detailed explanations in Formed in Place Gaskets) engineers use sealants or gaskets or both to ensure a good seal.

Anaerobic materials (such as those made by Hylomar or Loctite) are used on close fitting machined surfaces. They are impervious to most fluids, can be used as adhesives to provide structural strength to the joint (to augment the fasteners) and typically resist temperatures up to 150°C. They typically form a thin film along the surface of the metal and fill any surface gaps. However, they are brittle, and can only tolerate limited amounts of vibration, torque, shock or twisting; the maximum gap fill they can manage is about 0.3mm (although they are being used to 0.5mm). Hylomar, Loctite, and other manufacturers have added flexible polymers to their methacrylates to try to flexibilise their anaerobic gasketing compounds, but this can only accomplish so much.

Silicones, on the other hand, are applied as a substantial bead on the surface of a joint. In order to be effective, they must form a relatively thick layer. Silicones are typically used to fill gaps of 1mm to 5mm. Silicones can stretch (elongation of 400% or more is common in automotive silicones such as Hylomar 100 Series Silicone RTV) and by being applied in a bead of 1mm, they can stretch to fill a maximum gap of 4mm when a joint moves. But silicones do not allow close fitting joints. Instead, joints need to be designed with chamfers or grooves if they are to optimally seal with a silicone. While slumping silicones can be applied as a thin film, then the gap fill also decreases proportionately by the size of the film, with diminishing returns.

Practically speaking, there are a set of applications with close fitting joints with machined or flat surfaces that have maximum gaps of between 0.3mm and 0.7mm, which Universal Blue and AF will seal where no other sealant will work reliably. These are typically those prone to vibration or torque, such as jet engines or axle and transmission housings, which pull the joint apart. These movements lead anaerobic sealants to crack, and once cracked, there is nothing to stop an anaerobic from leaking further. Silicones, by contrast, require too large a film or bead to fit in these joints, or they are not chemically resistant to the fluids used.

Universal Blue, by contrast, pulls apart and then resets. Occasionally, under extreme conditions, weeping can be seen at the joint. Hylomar AF-HV, for example, was tested on an axle test rig by a major manufacturer under ridiculous loads, and where an anaerobic failed in short order and the oil leaked out. By contrast the axle sealed with Hylomar exceeded the requirement without failing, to the point they had difficulty completing the test to failure as the test rig broke repeatedly under the strains of the test rig’s maximum load. The only leak noticed was a slight weeping of oil around the flange from those microseconds where the joint was pulled apart by the extreme loads.

The second set of applications where Hylomar non-setting sealants are preferred are for joints that need to be taken apart and inspected or serviced regularly. Removing cured anaerobics and silicones can be tough work. High strength threadlockers need to be heated to come apart, and silicones must be scraped, which can damage the surface of the flange. Hylomar, as a non-setting sealant, can be easily wiped off with a rag. We recommend the use of Hylomar Gasket Remover or our Hylomar Grand Prix Wipes.

This includes the preferred use of Hylomar Universal Blue as a gasket dressing. The gasket provides the large gap fill and the structural strength and Universal Blue seals the surface imperfections, helps counteract compression set, and resists vibration. Universal Blue is used by many as a gasket dressing for cylinder head gaskets and elsewhere where expensive complex gaskets are required.

The third major use for Universal Blue is as a unique thread sealant or pipe sealant. Universal Blue has Calor approval as a pipe sealant for natural gas. It is resistant to most fluorocarbon refrigerants, although it has not yet been tested against the latest generation . It has broad chemical resistance to fuels, solvents, and fluids. For applications where the thread or pipe or plug are subject to vibration, differential expansion, or other joint movement, Universal Blue represents a (typically less expensive) alternative to anaerobic thread sealants. Its action can also serve to dampen noise, reduce vibration, and allow easy disassembly and reassembly (easy servicing). However, Universal Blue will not work on joints subject to erosive forces, such as some steam pipes. As a non setting sealant, rushing water or fluids may erode the uncured Hylomar from the edge of the joint, so joint design is crucial to prevent direct contact with the moving fluids or gas.

What is Hylomar PL32, SQ32, and Aerograde? What about PL32M, PL32L, and PL32H?

SQ32 was the original name of the R&D program at Rolls Royce that led to the development of Hylomar Universal Blue. PL32 was the original product name, and was available in Medium (PL32M), Light (PL32L), and Heavy (PL32H) grades. Hylomar Aerograde superceded these grades in 1985, but the references were retained in some specifications.
