What Does the Color of the Smoke my Car Emits Indicate?
The color of smoke can be a result of the type of fuel a vehicle is using or a sign that a vehicle is burning oil.
Bardahl is the World Leader in offering oil products that eliminate and
prevent oil burning, blow-by and oil leaks. Burning oil and blow-by is often
a dark blue plume of smoke seen at ignition. As an engine ages, the spaces
between valves and guides, piston rings and cylinder walls increases and
seals begin to deteriorate allowing oil to seep into the combustion chamber.
These are the major causes of oil burning, blow-by and leaks.
The Bardahl NO-SMOKE range of products consists of oil additives that seal these spaces. The result is improved compression, power and performance.
Type of Fuel a Vehicle is Using:
Gasoline engines will emit grey or white smoke if the fuel system or
combustion chamber is dirty. These emissions can be reduced or eliminated
with the use of a high quality fuel product like Bardahl Injector Cleaner
or better yet, Bardahl All-U-Need. In other words, a dirty fuel system can
lead to grey or white smoke. Bardahl Gas+, when used regularly, prevents
the buildup of gasoline system deposits preventing smoke emissions.
When a gasoline engine emits dark blue smoke, the problem is due to excessive engine wear and the resulting blow-by (oil burning) causes dark blue smoke.
In the case of diesel engines, the situation is more complex. Diesel engine smoke is caused by incomplete combustion. White smoke is caused by tiny droplets of unburned fuel resulting from engine misfiring at low temperature. This smoke should disappear as the engine warms up. Bardahl Diesel+ (DCI) will increase diesel cetane values, reducing white smoke. Black smoke could be caused by a faulty injector, insufficient air, and overloading and/or over fueling the engine. Diesel smoke due to fuel system deposits can be cured through use of Bardahl Diesel+, and DCI (Diesel + is the consumer version of DCI). Blue-gray smoke is the result of burning lubricating oil and is an indication the engine is in poor mechanical condition.
High oil consumption rates will cause blue-black or black smoke. Oil consumption rates vary greatly among vehicles with rates of 1 liter per 2,000 kilometers (1 quart per 1200 miles) to 1 liter per 6,750 kilometers (1 quart per 4000 miles) and still are considered normal. Bardahl motor oil additives are designed to prevent and cure the common causes of increased oil consumption and the blue black smoke associated with it.
Motor Oil enters an engine from the top and flows via several paths to the oil sump. The oil sump has a drain plug which is used to remove contaminated oil at the end of its life cycle. The oil sump is the collecting point for oil that is being circulated through the engine via the oil pump. Protecting the oil pump is a screen of wire mesh; this oil screen is a coarse filter that protects the oil pump from debris and contaminates in the sump. An oil screen typically removes particles 0.8 millimeters (about 1/32 of an inch) or larger in size. Figure # 1 shows the oil circulation routes in a typical vehicle engine:

removed from the engine. Sludge is a leading cause of poor performance and
efficiency in vehicles with extended drain intervals.
What is an engine De-Carbonization? And why do I need it?
First, let's break down what the term "De-Carbonization" really means. Basically, we wish to remove the carbon build up within your engine. Carbon is the leading factor for the following symptoms in all engines, NEW or high mileage:
- loss of power
- poor fuel economy
- rough idle
- hesitation at slower speeds
- hard to start
Automotive engines today are more efficient than they have ever been. They have higher power to weight ratio and use less fuel even when cruising at high speed. Because they are so efficient and finely tuned, their performance can easily be spoiled by a build up of deposits and dirt in the fuel system. The engine's sensors and computer modules may be working properly but if there is a physical barrier stopping the fuel from reaching the combustion chamber, there will be a loss of power and performance.
Very frequently the sensors and modules detect that there is a problem and make adjustments to compensate and, in so doing lose power and performance (e.g. combustion chamber deposits cause pinging and the computer retards the timing which reduces power and performance).
Most engine makers recommend periodic flushing of fuel injectors. However research (done mainly by BMW, but also done by Toyota, G.M. and Mercedes) has shown that driveability problems are caused as frequently by intake valve deposits as by blocked injectors.
Bardahl has developed a revolutionary process called SUPERTUNE. Wherever deposits are building up, SUPERTUNE will clean them out.
Below are a few examples of how SUPERTUNE will clean your engine components and restore lost power and performance while improving on your fuel economy.
In every engine deposits will form behind the intake valves. The only variant is how quickly they form and to what extent they interfere with the operation of the engine. These before and after photographs illustrate the nature of these deposits. Cleaning the valves with SUPERTUNE at regular intervals (approximately once a year) prevents these deposits from causing major problems.
An injection fuel system mixes very precise quantities of fuel and air. To provide the maximum fuel economy it is essential that the droplets of fuel be dispersed evenly throughout the air in an ultra fine mist.
Any obstruction in the injector's orifices will cause an uneven spray pattern, which cause uneven distribution of fuel, which reduces power and performance.
It is an essential part of a SUPERTUNE procedure to remove these deposits. A build up of deposits prevent crisp throttle response and, if the idle air bypass is blocked, causes uneven idling.

Is it true that there is a break-in period for a new engine?
It is a myth! In the past it was true, but today's engines are built with closer tolerances and more technologically advanced materials which now require proper lubrication from the start. Thus, there is no more need for a "break-in" oil to capture iron fillings. Majors manufacturers such as Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Aston-Martin, Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette, BMW, VW, Audi, Ferrari, Jaguar, etc... use 100% synthetic motor oils in their engines.

What makes a synthetic oil better than a mineral oil?
1. In a 100% synthetic oil, all the molecules are of a similar size and shape which reduces the harmful effects of high engine temperature.
2. In a mineral oil, the molecules are unstable and of varying shapes and sizes, they evaporate more readily and oxidize at high temperatures.
3. Also, synthetic base stocks are produced chemically and do not contain any contaminants. Conventional mineral oils contain small quantities of sulphur, paraffin, and asphaltic hydrocarbons; materials which cannot be entirely withdraw from mineral oil.
